   Notes from the Secretariat

Welcome to the Autumn 2018 EPSMA newsletter.

The EPSMA AGM is to be held at the Electronica exhibition on 13th November 11am to 5pm. Any members wishing to attend are asked to contact the secretariat so that room/catering can be arranged.

With vacations and quiet summer months there is not much activity to report so for this newsletter I will feature the activities of the EPSMA technical committee as a reminder of the great work they do:

   EPSMA Technical committee:

17 members from 7 countries including Friwo, Inpotron, XP power, Siemens, Excelsys, Vicor, Artesyn, Delta Energy Systems, Murrelektronik, Infineon, Puls, TI, SiQ, Salcomp, Bel Power Solutions, Block transformatoren and Efore.

The TC Chairman Paul Conway comments:

“With ever changing and evolving technology, trade relations, regulatory and safety standards, the power industry is subject to continual change. The EPSMA Technical Committee was formed to assemble technical specialists from many member companies to produce technical white paper guidelines to clarify and summarise the latest position on diverse topics.

Early papers included Thermal Measurements of Power Supplies and AC-DC Power Supply Safety Guidelines for DIN Rail, Medical, Railway, Hazardous Locations and Telecoms.

The transition to lead free electronics presented many challenges to the industry and companies shared expertise in writing two papers; ‘The Status of Lead-Free Electronics and its Impact on Power Electronics’ and ‘Obstacles related to Lead-free Soldering’ which explained the challenges and solutions to go ‘lead free’.

The TC produced a Guideline to Understanding Reliability Prediction to show how MTBF is calculated and the variation in prediction when using different standards and assumptions.

Recently we have revised guidelines including RoHS and WEEE Decision Trees, Accurate Efficiency Measurements, CE Marking, PFC Harmonic Current Emissions, and databases of energy efficiency standards for both external power supplies and battery chargers”.

    Linked In

We have a ’Linkedin’ forum for members to use and a data base of UL non-conformances for members to log their observations. Contact the secretariat for more details.

    CE Marking Issues forum

Remember we have a forum for issues members have with “CE” marking. If you would like to share problems (and resolutions!) With other members, please contact the secretariat with details.

A new password access system is now in place for the members’ area of the website. Your log-in credentials have not changed.

There is a new tab on the website for abstracts of EPSMA documents.

Management Committee meeting conference call 6th September

The meeting was attended by 11 MC members and 1 guest

TC Chairman Paul Conway reported on TC activities including an update to the EPSMA database “General Requirement of Energy Efficiency for External Power Supplies” See website for latest version.

Future projects for the TC were discussed and the secretariat will poll members for suggestions to be discussed/approved at the AGM in November.

Full minutes of the meeting along with links to presentations are available in the members area of the website.

The subcommittee preparing information for discussion with UL at the AGM has provided some information. All members are encouraged to contact the secretariat with their views/issues with UL services so we can take this good opportunity to discuss with them directly at the AGM.

    Next meetings

The AGM and next TC meeting will be at Electronica 12/13th November

    Shameless promotion…
